CAHHH Concert Committee Presents
Jeff Holland Chesapeake Troubadour
Sunday, May 18, 3:00 p.m.
Lodge Auditorium
Jeff Holland has a passion for Annapolis, the Chesapeake Bay, nature, animals and history. With tongue in cheek and just plain fun he creates music, poetry (words without music) and storytelling by performing original work inspired by life on the Bay.
Save the date and invite family and friends to enjoy and learn about our area ($10 per person donation at the door). Jeff will perform a fun medley of original tall tales and epic rousing poems highlighting the history of Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay. Join him in singing lively songs. If you wish to purchase his new book Walk around Arundel (52 places to hike with your dog and other best friends) bring $29.15 in cash, check, credit card or Venmo.
How did Jeff Holland become a local legend? His history provides a clue. With love of the Bay he served as director of the Annapolis Maritime Museum, as Riverkeeper for the West and Rhode Rivers and as Research Associate at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
He shared his music talents by founding the Chesapeake folk group Crab Alley with Janie Meneely. He and partner Kevin Brooks founded Them Eastport Oyster Boys in 1995 both creating original music. Then he co-produced the Chesapeake Music Festival at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center as part of the Smithsonian’s Year of Music. He has performed all around the Chesapeake as well as at venues outside the watershed from Ocean City to Oregon and in Ireland, Estonia and Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia. Jeff has recorded six albums and written dozens of songs.
You may have read his outdoors column on exploring local parks in the Sunday Capital Gazette. He has published a children’s book, Chessie the Sea Monster that Ate Annapolis. In 1994 he was appointed the Poet Laureate of Eastport, and for 2024-26 Jeff was appointed the Poet Laureate of Annapolis. According to Mayor Buckley, “He has a uniquely Annapolis view of the world….”
The chair of the Art in Public Places Commission that recommended the appointment states that Jeff “brings a sense of joy and play to his work that makes him perfect for the Poet Laureate role.” He writes with humor and rhyme not only about people, places, boats, and creatures but also history. (Information source for Jeff’s history is from the Baltimore Banner).
There was a legendary waterman from the town of Deale, with a heart of gold and guts of steel. To eat a lot of oysters was his only dream. He was Muskrat. Muskrat Green.

Parking in Heritage Harbour Streets is an issue that the Heritage Harbour Community Association (HHCA) and the Civic Association of Heritage Harbour Homeowners (CAHHH) received several very helpful responses from our residents. One of the most serious concerns was about parking that blocks access on our streets, especially for emergency response vehicles.
We contacted officers of the West Annapolis and Riva Voluntary Fire Departments about this problem. They shared that they need at least 10 feet between parked vehicles on opposite sides of a street and at least 15 feet from any fire hydrant. The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works representative agreed that sharing this critical information at Heritage Harbour would be “a huge victory for you and your community.”
This article emphasizes the importance that Heritage Harbour residents and visitors are aware of the importance of providing room for emergency vehicles to easily get to all residences in Heritage Harbour.
Emergency vehicles need a clearance of at least 10 feet on all streets and 15 feet access to fire hydrants:
We should never park vehicles on both sides of the street leaving less than 10 feet of clearance between them. (Distance of Two 5-foot people with arms outstretched) We should never park within 15 feet of any fire hydrant. (It is Illegal) Our Heritage Harbour community will continue to discuss ways to work together on keeping our streets safe.

Annual Meeting
Thanks to all who attended our annual meeting on November 11. Our keynote speakers, Bob Stevenson and Adam Stevenson, related stories about the Chesapeake Bay’s surviving lighthouses. Bob has been leading tours aboard the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark, since 2007. Bob was joined by his son Adam, who has sailed the bay since childhood and has developed an enthusiasm for the history and importance of America’s lighthouses. We enjoyed hearing about some very familiar lighthouses, like Sandy Point and Thomas Point Shoal.
During the business portion of the meeting, we elected/re-elected by acclamation the following members of our Board of Directors:
George Merchant, President
Julie Weatherly, Vice President
Michael Alin, Treasurer
Ann Marie Kelly, Secretary
We appreciate the hard work of these volunteer residents who commit much time and energy to our community.
On October 12, Joni Morrison and her volunteers did an excellent job of bringing the ever-popular shredding event to Heritage Harbour. Kudos to them for providing this service to our community, and thanks to everyone for your generous donations, which help defray the costs of the shredding truck. Joni has planned spring and fall shredding events for 2025, so watch for details in future Harbour Lights.
We would also like to thank our Concert Coordinator, Mary-Beth Phillips, and her team for bringing outstanding musical performances to Heritage Harbour. On October 13, performers from the Maryland Opera, led by pianist and Artistic Director James Harp, made opera accessible even to novices. On November 10, Daryl Davis and his band got us up on the dance floor with tunes featuring boogie-woogie, R&B and that old time rock ‘n’ roll. Please mark your calendars for a Celtic Christmas on December 8 and Brian Ganz on January 12.
January will also bring the Civic Association’s annual membership drive, organized by our membership chair Jerry Klinken. In our role as an organization separate from the Heritage Harbour Community Association, we deal primarily with matters that are external to Heritage Harbour, such as those involving county, state or federal governments and agencies. Please watch your USPS mail in early January for a letter from the Civic Association.
Wishing all a happy and healthy holiday season!
Vicki Hutchins, President
Civic Association of Heritage Harbour Homeowners (CAHHH)
The annual Civic Association Food Drive is near! On Monday, June 9, rain or shine, we will be collecting nonperishable food for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. Starting at 10:00 a.m. on Monday June 9, please leave your nonperishable food items at the curb or at the end of your driveway.
PLEASE CHECK EXPIRATION DATES.
We will be collecting, sorting and boxing the food in the parking lot of the Heritage Harbour Lodge. We have been averaging over five tons of food and over $10,000 in donations. The need for food is great, as is our need for helpers to pack and sort.
We also need help unloading food donations from cars and moving packed boxes a short distance. If you can help, please contact Deedee at 410-757-0355. If you have volunteered in the past you will be contacted in May.
If you wish to donate please make your checks out to Anne Arundel County Food Bank and send to Deedee Mahaffay, 947 Tidewater Grove Court. Many Food Drives are in the fall or around the holidays. This time of year, the County Food Bank is running low on food, yet their need during the summer is great. Please help! We look forward to a sunny day and a record breaking Food Drive.
